• This WBTV news story describes how NSON volunteers advocate, navigate, and educate, and accompany our neighbors in need. Many individuals in the Charlotte area can benefit from the knowledge and talents of our volunteers during their journey toward holistic health. This is one neighbor’s story.

  • While living at the Howard Levine Men’s Shelter on Statesville Avenue, we met this neighbor during one of our monthly blood pressure clinics. In collaboration with Roof Above, Gary was referred to the care team at the Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic. This is his story.

  • “The people at the shelter recommended I come here,” this neighbor told the care team at the Michael Jordan Clinic. NSON volunteers worked in close collaboration with the Roof Above nursing team to ensure Daryl received the advocacy he needed to begin the journey toward holistic health.

Who We Are

Nurses Serving Our Neighbors is a 501c3 organization serving the Charlotte-area. We are faith-based non-denominational volunteer nurses and caring companions who desire to accompany individuals (our neighbors) as they pursue their health goals. We are prompted by the Holy Spirit and led by Jesus’ example to be present to our neighbors so they know they are not alone.

Who We Serve

A neighbor is an individual who seeks our help and support on the journey to holistic (body, mind, and spirit) health. They are typically underserved and lack family support, and may be homebound or homeless. Many neighbors have an overwhelming medical condition or diagnosis.

We use a referral-based process to identify neighbors who need accompaniment that aligns with our mission. New neighbors are referred to us by faith-based congregations, community organizations, healthcare providers, and family members. We assess the needs of each referral before meeting them in their home, a shelter, temporary housing, or healthcare facility. Finally, we match the neighbor with a team of two volunteers who have a particular gift, talent or expertise that can be used to advocate for that neighbor. We help our neighbors determine what they value most and support them as they pursue their health goals.

How We Do It

Some examples of how we serve our neighbors:

  • Assist our neighbors with access to specialists, physicians, medication, and insurance.

  • Connect our neighbors to supportive therapies like physical therapy, nutritionists, and others.

  • Assess the neighbor’s holistic health (body, mind and spirit) in their own environment - whether at home or in a facility - so they feel safe and comfortable to share their needs.

  • Develop a plan of care along with the neighbor and provide clear, concise and attainable goals.

  • Host monthly blood pressure and medication reconciliation clinics at homeless shelters.

  • Accompany our neighbors to medical appointments, if indicated and appropriate.

  • Pray for our neighbors, caretakers, and their community.

  • Build trust and reinforce that our neighbors are not alone on their journey.

  • Recruit and train credentialed and skilled volunteer nurse advocates.

  • Forge relationships with community resources who will commit to providing high-quality and attentive care to our neighbors.
