Our History
Nurses Serving Our Neighbors was founded by Teri Ferguson, RN, BSN, FCN, as a continuation of a long-held calling to serve the most vulnerable in a community through the compassionate work of Faith Community Nursing, a specialty practice of the American Nurses Association. Teri has always felt this calling–not only to care for others in need of support, but to build a network of nurses who could amplify that care and extend its reach. What started as a personal calling to serve through her church, alongside just a small group of nurses, soon grew into a broader collaborative effort that is grounded in faith, compassion, and the belief that everyone deserves care that nurtures body, mind, and spirit.
Nurses Serving Our Neighbors became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 2021.
Our Commitment to Faith Community Nursing
Faith Community Nursing (formerly known as Parish Nursing) began in the 1980s when Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg partnered with Lutheran General Hospital to place nurses in church communities to promote whole-person health in body, mind, and spirit. The first program launched in 1984 in Illinois. Since then, the practice has spread across the United States and internationally. Recognized as a speciality practice by the American Nurses Association in 1998, Faith Community Nursing continues to provide a framework for nurses to integrate spiritual care with their professional nursing skills. Our Nurse Advocates serve our Charlotte-area neighbors in need following the guidelines and principles of Faith Community Nursing.
